Hood for goldfish aquarium?

i bought a 10 gal aquarium for my black moor and calico ryukin and it came with a hood with openings and a light. What is the hood for all i seems to do is warm up the water which isnt good for the gold fish because they are supposed to be in cold water. Am i missing something so what exactly does it do and do i need it thanks
