Movie Title Help: set in circa 1950's, on-up, clean-cut guy?

Need help with movie title. set in 1950s, I think. It's about a clean cut, on-up, well-mannered, virgin high school guy from a middle cl, stable family who like this girl who is out of his league. She's the type that might go for, or could at least get, a tall, athletic type guy. Anyway, a new guy moves to town. He comes from a less well-off family-- his dad may even be an alcoholic. He's like a greaser. He wears a leather jacket, white t-shirt, blue jeans. Straight out of The Outsiders, right. He's on the tall side, handsome, cool, but not an athlete. I want to say he works on cars. maybe he's a mechanic. The two meet and eventually become friends because they are both outsiders. The "cool" guy takes upon himself to help the other guy out and give him advice on how to get the girl he wants. Long story short, the cool, tough guy ends up being a sweetheart, puppy dog,...boy scout finally looses virginity...There is old cars, even a diner scene or scenes. Can you think of the title?
