Can someone briefly explain Ayn Rand's beliefs, as well as the saying Go Galt?

I have never read any of her books. I've heard of her through friends, on the internet etc. I looked her up on wikipedia and have formed an opinion about her and her beliefs\philosophies, but I would like to get different opinions on her writing. Please do not reply saying that i should pick up one of the books because i wont. She isnt important to me, ive just been seeing her name more than i would like to, and always from pretty senseless collge kids. Im not from the states so if she is mainstream i also would not know. I just want a brief explantion of her beliefs and your opinion on it, so that i can understand who the hell this person is that is getting so much attention
