Would a culture trip to the United States be a good idea?

Im a born american citizen, just got my pport...went to america as a 5 year old but none more after that...have always felt that I needed to connect to my African American heritage but have at the same time have been apprehensive about acceptance into the black community as I am more or less unfamiliar with the customs and practices...any advice??
